Summer may be drawing to a close, but fire season will be with us for at least a few more weeks.  Which is why the bosses at Ashland Fire and Rescue are putting out reminders of things people can do to prepare for the possibility of a wildfire nearby.

Ashland had a close call with the Siskiyou Fire in September of 2009, and the city's proximity to forested land makes it ever-vulnerable.

Forests have a way of regenerating after devastating fires.

Human-built amenities in or near the forests take a bit of time and attention.

The Biscuit Fire burned through the Kalmiopsis Wilderness in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest 13 years ago.

And it was just recently that members of the Siskiyou Mountain Club completed the rebuilding of a trail through the burn area.

The question is often asked during fire season, when thousands of acres are going up in smoke: weren't we talking about restoring regular fires to the ecosystem?

The answer is yes.

Or yes, BUT... the scientific answer is one thing, the political is another.

The Bureau of Land Management and other agencies do perform prescribed burns.

All post offices, except for one, that were closed due to the fires burning in Northern California have been reopened.

Augustine Ruiz, spokesperson for the United States Postal Service, says that all USPS branches are now running as usual, with the exception of the Sawyers Bar contract postal unit in Siskiyou County.

This privately managed site that contracts with the USPS to provide mail service is still cut off by the July Complex Fires.

That has changed in recent years, but it's not an overnight process.

The summer fires in Josephine and Douglas counties damaged few structures.

But they put a huge dent in the tourism business, especially during the time the Rogue River was closed to rafting.
