SOU Football, Learning Collaboratives, and Holiday Specials: Dec 22-26 on JX

We hope the SOU football team brings a trophy.  The Southern Oregon U. football squad sends reps to the studio to talk about playing in the National Championship on Monday.

It's part of our set of Christmas week offerings on The Exchange.  We'll also delve into a learning collaborative in Medford, and offer a couple of musical segments.

Here, minus links and pix, is the week:

Monday, December 22, 2014/8:00        Whooping Cough And Chicken Pox
California is seeing more cases of whooping cough (pertussis) than at any time in the last 70 years.  And Jackson County on the Oregon side is seeing more cases as well.  Pertussis and chicken pox are both up in number, causing concerns for county health officials.  We hear the causes and the approach to bringing the numbers down.

Monday, December 22, 2014/8:30        Oregon's Other Football Champions (Please?)
By the time we talk to the members of the Southern Oregon University football team, one of two things will be true: they'll either be national champions, or runners-up.  SOU plays Marian University (of Indiana) in the NAIA National Championship in football on Friday afternoon, on national TV.  It's a big deal for a program nearly unnoticed in a state where football fans go nuts over the Oregon Ducks.  Tune in to hear the reaction to the game and the end of a very successful season.

Monday, December 22, 2014/9:00        Avoiding The Tentacles of "Technocreep"
Here's a question that is getting rarer in today's world: "how did you know my name?"  In the age of Facebook and Google, we can find out lots of things about lots of people.  Oh, and they can do the same to us.  Cyber expert Thomas Keenan helped write Canada's computer crime laws decades ago; he writes about how far things have come in his book "Technocreep: The Surrender of Privacy and the Capitalization of Intimacy."  We pick his brain, but in a friendly way.

Tuesday, December 23, 2014/8:00        Gypsy Soul With Holiday Music
Sleigh bells ring, are you listening?  The melody arrives in our heads with the words for most holiday songs.  We get a chance to hear holiday songs from some of this area's finest musicians in a pair of segments this week.  JPR Music Director Eric Teel interviews Gypsy Soul and they play some of their songs in a special holiday session on today's Exchange.  Cilette Swan and Roman Morykit are the twin hearts of the band and our guests.

Tuesday, December 23, 2014/8:30        Collaborating On Early Learning In Medford
The formula is well-known, but not always easily applied: strengthen families, and you strengthen children as students.  This is the basic premise of the West Medford Early Learning Collaborative, which includes a number of organizations in the neighborhood of Medford's Jackson Elementary School.  An Oregon Community Foundation grant helped the collaborative get started.  We get the details on the workings of the collaborative.

Tuesday, December 23, 2014/9:00        A Life Changed: "Who Knows Tomorrow"
Lisa Lovatt-Smith had it all by her mid-thirties: great jobs, famous friends, a house in Paris.  Then she visited an orphanage in Africa, and her life turned upside-down.  And she let it.  Today Lovatt-Smith lives in a mud hut in Ghana, running the organization OAfrica, which assists orphans.  Her memoir is "Who Knows Tomorrow," and she is our guest.

Wednesday, December 24, 2014/8:00    Holiday Sounds With Em Harriss
Sure, the music business can be a grind.  But making music sure is fun… especially during the holidays, when everybody seems to hum a tune.  Ashland-based Em Harriss recently visited the JPR studio to play some of her own songs, along with holiday favorites.  JPR Music Director Eric Teel put together this segment of songs and interviews.  Think of it as one of our holiday gifts to you!

Wednesday, December 24, 2014/8:30    Growing The Food Project
People donate a mountain of money and food during the holiday season.  But people need food all year long.  The Ashland Food Project set out to address the need several years ago, with regular, predictable food pickups.  Now the model is in place in several Rogue Valley cities, and being copied elsewhere.  Founder John Javna visits the studio to talk about the trajectory of the various food projects.

Wednesday, December 24, 2014/9:00    The Secret Sidekicks Of History
From the First Lady who ran the White House after Woodrow Wilson's stroke to the husband who stayed grounded while Amelia Earhart took off, history is full of interesting "plus-ones."  These unsung heroes of history are featured in text and art in "The Who, the What, and the When: 65 Artists Illustrate the Secret Sidekicks of History."  Authors Jenny Volvovski and Julia Rothman did most of the text work.  They join us to talk about their project.

Christmas Day 2014/8:00            JX Sub: The Christmas Truce

Christmas Day 2014/9:00            JX Sub: NPR Tinsel Tales 3
Our Christmas Day programming continues in Hour 2 with NPR Tinsel Tales 3.  Tinsel Tales began several years ago, assembling NPR voices past and present in something like an hour of story-telling.

Friday, December 26, 2014/8:00        JX Sub: NPR Tinsel Tales 1
