Redwood Highway Fire Nearly Contained, Suspect Arrested

ODF

Life returned to normal in areas around the Redwood Highway Fire on Saturday.

By evening, firefighters had the fire nearly contained, and evacuation orders were being relaxed.

The fire broke out Friday afternoon in Selma, north of Cave Junction.  Flames jumped U.S. 199, forcing the temporary shutdown of the road between the Rogue Valley and the coast.

Oregon Department of Forestry reports three homes and five outbuildings destroyed along Deer Creek Road.  Residents of that road and Davis Creek Road received a mix of evacuation orders, ranging from Level 1 (ready) to Level 3 (go).  All orders dropped to Level 1 by Saturday evening.

ODF and the Oregon State Police arson unit say evidence points to a campfire getting out of control.  Late Saturday, Marcus A. Yeoman, no address known, was cited for reckless burning.  He had already been taken to the Josephine County Jail on an unrelated warrant.

Fire crews report 50 acres burned, with the fire 90% contained by late Saturday.
