U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke announced a proposal Wednesday to expand hunting and fishing at 10 national wildlife refuges, including two in Oregon.
Zinke proposed opening bird hunting at Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge, 10 miles west of Salem, and opening sport fishing at Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge, south of Lincoln City.
The proposal at Baskett Slough would allow two weekends of youth hunting for waterfowl in September, following state regulations. No hunting is currently allowed at the refuge.
The idea was actually approved in 2012, but hasn’t been implemented, said Laila Lienesdh, deputy project leader for the Willamette Valley refuge complex.
