Emergency management experts are meeting on the Oregon coast this week to discuss tsunami preparedness.
The Oregon Office of Emergency Management’s tsunami conference is bringing together a wide variety of experts to talk about how to mitigate the effects of a tsunami that would strike the coast after a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake.
That quake is expected to be at least magnitude 8.0 and could hit at any time. The resulting tsunami could bring 30- to 50-foot waves.
Office of Emergency Management Geologic Hazards Program Coordinator Althea Rizzo said there’s a lot people can do to get prepared.
"If you live in the inundation zone, you can partner with a family that lives outside of the inundation zone and store your supplies there," Rizzo said. "Create those networks so that when this thing does happen, you and your family and your community know what to do."
According to Rizzo, the goal of the conference is to bring people together to learn from one another. Those communities can then take that knowledge back to their communities to increase preparedness.
