A hike in bottle deposits is likely in 2017 as Oregon commissioners consider a House bill passed in 2011 that called for deposits to double if the redemption rate had dipped below 80 percent for two consecutive years.
“The deposit going up is extremely likely,” said Cherilyn Bertges, a spokesperson for the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative, which is part of BottleDrop, a system for redeeming beverage containers.
“From everything that we’ve seen, we are preparing for (the deposit) to go up.”
Redemption data from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission for 2013 and 2014 shows that both years had return rates of about 70 percent.
