Newspaper Society Columns Keep Neighbors Informed

Early newspaper society columns kept up with local residents.  Here are some excerpts from the “Local and Personal” column in the Ashland, Ore. Daily Tidings of Sept. 2, 1919:

Charles Gillette has recently remodeled and painted his residence at the comer of High and Church streets.

Will Myer of the fire department is taking a 16-day furlough from his duties.

The Island boat in Ashland creek below the free auto-camp has a luxurious growth of ferns over it at present, and is a thing of beauty.

Sid Carter, accompanied by Herman and George Trott, left … Monday morning on a hunting trip … The boys were much elated over …hunting for real deer, and stated that if they did not get a chance to bring home venison they would bring home the (camp) bacon.

Mr. and Mrs. Hilty, daughter Miss Lillian, and Master Elwood Francis, returned last night from … the coast where they saw the Pacific fleet, … and boarded the New Mexico, Admiral Rodman's flagship. … Ashland never looked so good to them as it did on their return, they declared.

Society pages made it hard not to know your neighbors.
