income taxes

Congress passed it, the president signed it, everybody argued about it.

How WILL the new federal tax bill affect you?  It certainly depends on how much money you make.

There are other wrinkles in there, too, especially for states like Oregon with high local and state taxes.

The Oregon Center for Public Policy has been watching the development of the tax legislation and parsing the wording.  Daniel Hauser is a policy analyst for OCPP and our guest.

Happy Tax Day!  Is that an appropriate greeting?  We got extra time past the usual April 15th deadline, but tonight is the night our tax returns must be filed.

T.R. Reid is a journalist and author well-known to NPR audiences.

He compares the American tax system to those of other countries in his newest book, A Fine Mess: A Global Quest for a Simpler, Fairer, and More Efficient Tax System

In general, he finds we PAY less than people in other countries, but our system is much more complicated.

Tax time can be stressful in a number of ways, and one of them is the possibility of identity theft in the tax preparation process.

The Oregon Department of Revenue issues warnings about how to avoid such theft.

You've heard the line: only two things in life are sure--death and taxes.  So those are the topics on this week's VENTSday.

Let's get your thoughts on death with dignity in this week's survey, and your observations as the income tax filing deadline arrives (April 18).

Listeners take stage on our weekly VENTSday segment, a chance to vent on a couple of topics in the news--by phone, by email, or through our online survey.

We provide the topics, you provide the opinions. Your thoughts are front and center on VENTSday.

No expertise necessary; just opinions and the ability to express them in a radio-friendly way. We post our weekly survey on one or both of the topics in advance.
