Trapped Under The Sea

Neil Swidey describes the extreme--ultimately fatal--risks to finish a major public works project in Boston.

History is filled with stories of massive public works projects that cost lives to complete.

The building of the Brooklyn Bridge alone killed some two dozen workers.  The cleaning up of Boston's filthy harbor was made possible by a long undersea tunnel for sewage... a tunnel workers had to traverse in order to complete the project.

Mental Health Care Revamped: Compass House

Credit socompasshouse.org

Matt Vorderstrasse describes the plans for Compass House in downtown Medford.

We've come a long way since the days when mentally ill people were "warehoused" in huge state mental hospitals.

But we're still looking for the solutions that work best for each community.

Later this year, Medford will become home to Compass House, a mental health facility that is operated jointly by staff and clients.

Cokie Roberts And The Founding Mothers

Credit NPR

Cokie Roberts speaks of the tough fight to create the United States... and the tough fights of today.

The term "founding fathers" rolls off the tongue pretty easily in our country.

Franklin, Washington, Jefferson… we can all name some of the men who helped found the republic.

But women played a role, too, despite the very different gender relations of the 18th century.

Freedom And Dialogue In A Polarized World

Credit Wikimedia

Sharon Schuman explains the concept of "dialogic freedom," so we can talk to each other across ideological lines.

To understand a person, walk a mile in their shoes.

Not a lot of shoe-swapping going on in the world today, is there?  Historians assure us there have been other periods of polarization in American history (see: Civil War), but we have to live in this one.  Unless we can do something about it.
