Colorful vignettes dedicated to the regional history of Southern Oregon and Northern California. As It Was is an all volunteer effort -- produced by Raymond Scully and narrated by Shirley Patton in partnership with writers from the Southern Oregon Historical Society.

Medford Wrestler Becomes National and International Champion

Les Gutches started wrestling with a local club when he was seven years old, and by the time he reached South Medford High School he was a star, winning three state wrestling titles in the early 1990s. At Oregon State, he won NCAA Division-1 wrestling titles in 1995 and 1996, and was named the nation’s top collegiate wrestler.

Wedding Bells Invite Arduous Jouney for Two Girls in 1883

In 1883, Ottilie Parker and her sister at Parkersburg, Ore., on the lower Coquille River were invited to a wedding in Gold Beach, about 60 miles south. They accompanied Mary Windsor, who was older and the bride’s future aunt.

Siskiyou County Once Had an Annual Hog Drive

Motorists still might encounter cattle being driven along the roads of Siskiyou County, Calif., but they’re unlikely to spot a drove of pigs. There was a time, between the late 1800s and 1916, when the Bennett Company of Forks of Salmon had an annual hog drive, usually in November.  The practice ended when roads were established into the Salmon River back country.
