Zap Cars, Great Movies, and Quake Comics: JX Sept 1-5

Shorter days, cooler nights, and (nearly) everybody back in school: it's September in the State of Jefferson!

Our first week of Jefferson Exchange (JX) offerings is a typically diverse list.

It includes discussions about electric cars, a listing of monumental works of film, and a comic book produced in Oregon to educate teens about earthquake dangers.

Below, minus the fancy wrapping, is our still-developing list...

Monday, September 1, 2014        Labor Day Re-runs
Labor Day marks a pause in our labors to produce a daily version of The Jefferson Exchange.  So we dug into the interviews of the past for today's offerings.  At 8: "Living With Guns"… New York Times veteran Craig Whitney offers a perspective in the ongoing debate over guns.  He joined us just a month after the Newtown school shootings.  At 9: "Time Cure".  Maybe it's too broad to say time heals all wounds, but putting the passage of time in perspective does help treat the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.  Psychologists Richard Sword and Philip Zimbardo joined us.

Tuesday, September 2, 2014/8:00        Zooming Down The Road Electrically
As electric and hybrid vehicles become more common, we'll have to retrain ourselves as a society.  What sound will we use to replace the "vroom vroom" of a gas-powered muscle car?  There might be an answer to that question available at the Southern Oregon Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Show.  It's a one day event set for Saturday at ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum in Ashland.  We get a preview from one of the organizers.

Tuesday, September 2, 2014/8:30        Eat Local Week In The Rogue Valley
Turn over some of the produce in the store next time you shop.  You'll probably find labels bearing information like "product of Chile."  So a lot of our travels a long way to get to our tables.  While local farmers produce many of the same products.  That's why THRIVE, The Rogue Initiative For a Vital Economy, hosts "Eat Local Week" later this month.  We're guessing it's no accident that the week comes during harvest season.

Tuesday, September 2, 2014/9:00        Assessing Anti-Heroes: "I Wear The Black Hat"
Longtime fans of Superman gasped when he actually committed murder in the most recent movie.  That was unthinkable to generations of comic-book readers, but a typical move for today's crop of anti-heroes.  Even our old heroes take on a dark tint in today's world.  Writer Chuck Klosterman not only noticed, he finds himself gravitating to the darker characters.  He documents the trend in his book "I Wear the Black Hat: Grappling with Villains (Real and Imagined)."

Wednesday, September 3, 2014/8:30    VENTSday
VENTSday is our weekly "opinion swarm"… we throw a pair of topics on the table, and let listeners vent--politely--on those topics.  They can range from the global to the hyper-local, and all responsible opinions are welcome.  We bring the topics, you bring the opinions.  It's VENTSday on The Jefferson Exchange, and you participate by calling 1-800-838-3760 or 541-552-6782 or emailing JX@jeffnet.org.

Wednesday, September 3, 2014/9:00    Movies "Not To Be Missed"
Try to pick the best movies of all time, just try it.  Actually, you don't have to, because L.A. Times and NPR film critic Kenneth Turan already did the job.  Turan chose a pretty big list, too: 54 films in all, described in loving detail in his book "Not To Be Missed."  Be prepared to be surprised... "Casablanca" is on the list, but "Gone With The Wind" is not.  More surprises await as Kenneth Turan visits the Exchange.

Thursday, September 4, 2014/8:00    Teaching Innovation And Leadership In College
Some people who start college don't stay on track and finish on time.  Instead, they get jobs and get busy making money and raising families.  Those are the people Southern Oregon University wants in its new Innovation and Leadership program.  INL, as the shorthand goes, brings together five different academic disciplines for working professionals to complete their bachelor's degrees.  It is truly a working person's program; students need at least five years of full-time work experience to take part.  We learn the details from SOU's Jeanne Stallman.

Thursday, September 4, 2014/8:30    The Cascadia Quake In A Comic Book
It is simply hard to imagine our homes and neighborhoods bent and broken by an earthquake.  But a large quake is a distinct possibility in our region, sitting as it does atop the Cascadia Subduction Zone.  Emergency managers in both states work to raise awareness of the risks.  Oregon's Emergency Management department just teamed up with Portland's Dark Horse Comics to produce a comic book about the aftermath of a big earthquake.  "Without Warning!" is pitched to teen readers.  Writer Althea Rizzo joins us.

Friday, September 5, 2014/8:00        First Friday In The Arts
The first Friday of any month has become a day to celebrate the arts around our region.  Several communities hold First Friday art walks, and some hold similar observances on other weekend days.  The Exchange syncs up with the art world on First Friday, by visiting with listeners about arts events in the coming month.  Join the free-for-all by calling with details about arts events in your town... 800-838-3760 around the region, 541-552-6782 in the Rogue Valley, or by email at JX@jeffnet.org.

Friday, September 5, 2014/8:30        Ice Bucket Challenge Heats Up ALS Funding
Who knew a guy dumping cold water on his head could start a fundraising avalanche?  The "Ice Bucket Challenge" went viral on the Internet in late July.  The first month raised awareness of the disease Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis--and about $100 Million for ALS research.  We visit with members of the ALS association in Oregon about the disease and efforts to find more effective treatments.

Friday, September 5, 2014/9:00        What It Means To Be Labeled "Organic"
Oregon voters will get another crack at GMO labeling in the November election.  A measure on the ballot would require labeling for genetically engineered foods.  But let's drop back a bit and consider food labels in a more general sense: what do the labels tell us?  For example, what does it really mean when you see "organic" slapped on a product in the store?  Longtime journalist and University of Oregon professor Peter Laufer went in search of the answer to that particular question.  What he found should raise a few eyebrows... Laufer reports his findings in "Organic: A Journalist’s Quest to Discover the Truth behind Food Labeling."
