Want To Help Roseburg Shooting Victims? Choose Wisely

Rich Pedroncelli/AP
Vanessa Becker, chairwoman of the Umpqua Community College Board of Trustees, speaks during a news conference, Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, in Roseburg, Ore.

Looking to help those affected by the Oct. 1 mass shooting at Umpqua Community College?

Vanessa Becker, chairwoman of  Umpqua Community College’s board of trustees, offered some advice at a Saturday press conference.

“We strongly recommend that donors cast a careful eye when considering other funds, as some are not based at charitable organizations and might apply high administrative fees,” Becker said. “Also, unfortunately, at times like these, there are unscrupulous people who will set up false accounts.”

She recommended donating to these organizations:

  • The Greater Douglas County United Way has created a fund called the UCC Relief Fund. It is located at Umpqua Bank. People can donate through any Umpqua Bank branch, through the United Way website or through a text-to-give number 541-214-2822
  • The Umpqua Community College Foundation is accepting donations to their scholarship fund.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross is asking for blood donations.
