Most of the nordic course for Bend's annual Pole Pedal Paddle race is dirt instead of snow.

Organizers for Bend's race have cancelled the cross country skiing leg of the annual athletic event due to lack of snow.

The Pole, Pedal, Paddle is a multisport competition that combines skiing, cycling, running and boating into one big race. With very little snow left on the course, the event organizers have cancelled the nordic leg of the competition. Instead, athletes will complete a short trail run.

"We're going to make it as great of an event as we can with what we've been handed," said Molly Cogswell-Kelly, one of the organizers of the event. "All of the other components are in Bend, and none of that is changing. We'll still have the bike, we'll still have the run, we'll still have the paddle."

The cancellation comes as many parts of Oregon experienced record low snow pack levels this winter.

Cogswell-Kelly says that this is the only year since 1977 with no cross-county skiing as part of the Pole, Pedal, Paddle. The race takes place May 16.
