Oregon Lets Marijuana Businesses Sell Old Product In Child-Proof Containers

Oregon regulators gave marijuana retailers a little breathing room Friday as new testing, labeling and packaging rules start.

The new rules begin Oct.1 and mean that cannabis sold under the old regulations may be in violation as it exists.

But the head of the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, Steve Marks, said businesses will be allowed to repackage old products into new child-proof containers and add additional information.

“What you’ll begin to see on those old products is a sticker saying they’re not tested to the new standards,” Marks said.

He said his staff will focus on educating store owners before cracking down.

The new rules also require more testing for pesticides and other chemicals, but there’s a bottleneck as everyone tries to meet the deadline. So the OLCC decided to test less over the next few months and then ramp up again.

Finally, the agency also banned the use of pot names that are familiar to kids, like "Girl Scout cookies," "Jedi kush" and "Cinderella."
