Janis Joplin, Police Cameras, and More: Jan 12-16 on JX

Some interviews we'd really like to have are just plain impossible.  We can't, for example, book Abraham Lincoln.  Or Janis Joplin, for the same reason.

But in Joplin's case, we can talk to someone who knew her.  And we'll do just that, on Monday.

We'll also talk to a Rogue Valley police chief who put body cameras on his officers months ago.

Those are just a few highlights for the week on The Exchange.  Here's the list so far:

Monday, January 12, 2015/9:00        Touring With Janis Joplin
Try explaining the sound of the late singer Janis Joplin to someone who has never heard her.  Not easy, is it?  No one else put out that distinctive mix of pain, passion, and raw power.  Joplin died at age 27 decades ago... but not before she met and worked with John Byrne Cook.  His work as musician, crew member, and road manager put him in Janis Joplin's orbit at the height of her career.  He tells the story of that time in "On The Road With Janis Joplin."

Wednesday, January 14, 2015/8:30    VENTSday
VENTSday is our weekly "opinion swarm"… we throw a pair of topics on the table, and let listeners vent--politely--on those topics.  They can range from the global to the hyper-local, and all responsible opinions are welcome.  We bring the topics, you bring the opinions.  It's VENTSday on The Jefferson Exchange, and you participate by calling 1-800-838-3760 or emailing JX@jeffnet.org.

Thursday, January 15, 2015/9:00        The Foods You Eat: "What The Fork?"
It's not unusual for people to learn the truth about the foods they eat and utter an obscenity (or two).  That's pretty much what happened to Stefanie Sacks years ago, and propelled her onto the path to learning more about nutrition.  Now she's a professional chef with a master's degree in nutrition.  And she bends a popular utterance into the title of her new book, "What The Fork Are You Eating? An Action Plan for Your Pantry and Plate."  Sacks hosts her own radio show, too... but she's consented to join ours for an hour.

Friday, January 16, 2015/8:30        Police And The Video Record
Police are under scrutiny like never before, thanks to incidents like the shooting of an unarmed man by police in Ferguson, Missouri last year.  Some--clearly not all--questions can be resolved by keeping better records of police activities.  That's where body cameras come in, giving police and the public video images of encounters in the field.  The police in the City of Talent have been using the cameras for a while now.  Chief Mike Moran joins us to talk about their uses, and their effectiveness.

Friday, January 16, 2015/9:00        Listening To Stories From "The Articulate Earth"
David Rains Wallace is one of many people who fell in love with the American West and never got over it.  He's been living in California and writing about the environment for decades now.  And now a number of his shorter works have been compiled into "Articulate Earth: Adventures in Ecocriticism."  We'll talk bristlecone pines, biodiversity, and a whole lot more when David Rains Wallace pays a visit to The Exchange.
