Former Mayor Sam Adams will be leaving Portland for a new job in Washington, D.C.
Adams announced on Twitter that he will join the World Resources Institute as its director of U.S. Climate Initiative.
"Adams will lead WRI's strategy to analyze and develop new policies, build political will and support coalitions that will encourage the country's transition to a strong, low-carbon economy," according to a press release.
Adams served as Portland's mayor from 2009 to 2012. He was the first openly gay mayor to serve in a metropolitan U.S. city. Early in his term, the new mayor was confronted about covering his sexual relationship with a teenager. Adams later admitted to lying, but didn't resign following the scandal.
Prior to his term, he was a city commissioner for four years and former Portland Mayor Vera Katz's chief of staff.
Since leaving office, he has served as executive director of the City Club of Portland.
