While preliminary election returns in both Oregon and California show some races too close to call, the results of others in both states are clear. Among them:
Oregon:
* Governor John Kitzhaber has defeated his Republican challenger Dennis Richardson to claim an unprecedented fourth term.
* Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley has won a second term by defeating Republican Monica Wehby.
* All incumbents in the U.S. House of Representatives have won re-election, including Republican Greg Walden, who trounced Democrat Aelea Christofferson in the Second District and Democrat Peter DeFazio, who defeated Republican Art Robinson for the third election in a row.
* Measure 91 (legalized recreational marijuana) appears to have passed by a handy margin, as has Measure 89 (equal rights amendment). Meanwhile, Measure 86 (to establish a fund for Oregonians seeking higher education), Measure 88 (to allow drivers licenses without proof of legal residency) and Measure 90 (top two primary) are being crushed by two-to-one margins.
California:
* Governor Jerry Brown wins a fourth term.
* Proposition 1 (water bond) and Proposition 2 (rainy day fund) have both passed.
* Congress members Doug LaMalfa (District 1) and Jared Huffman (District 2) easily won re-election.
