Burning Biomass, Food Networks, and First Friday: November 3-7 on JX

The first week of November features our usual smorgasbord of offerings for the ear.

We start on Southern Oregon University's biomass cogeneration proposal, visit with the Rogue Valley Food System Network, and outline November events in our First Friday Arts segment.

And we're just getting started... below is the list, before we dress up the individual items...

Monday, November 3, 2014/8:00        SOU Considers Biomass For Fuel
Southern Oregon University prides itself on its environmental friendliness and sustainability efforts.  But its next big project in this area could take a big sales job.  Two of the university's aging steam boilers need to be replaced.  And the next boilers could be fired by biomass, woody waste material.  The boilers would produce steam and electricity--and the by-products of burning wood.  We sit down with SOU reps to talk about the proposal and the process.

Monday, November 3, 2014/9:00        Tongue Firmly In Cheek: "Science For Her"
If you're looking for actual lessons in science, skip Megan Amram's "Science for Her."  If you're looking for some good hard laughs, check out the book.  We did, and could not stop ourselves from booking Megan as a guest.  Her comedy writing is featured on TV's "Parks and Recreation," and the book looks like the Cosmopolitan magazine staff took over the textbook department.  Megan Amram explains what her book teaches.

Tuesday, November 4, 2014/8:00        Rise Of The Rogue Valley Food System Network
The "eat local" movement is clearly not a fad.  Food producers and consumers continue to pay greater attention to where food comes from, how it's distributed, and who buys what, and why.  Now there's a new entity coordinating the many parts of the food chain, the Rogue Valley Food System Network.  We hear about the mission and works of the network in Jackson and Josephine Counties.

Tuesday, November 4, 2014/9:00        An Invisible Hand For Your Happiness?
Adam Smith might be rolling in his grave.  He only used the phrase "invisible hand" three times in his many writings.  But it's the phrase for which the 18th-Century Scots economist is best remembered.  The memories might change just a bit with Russ Roberts's new book "How Adam Smith Can Change Your Life: An Unexpected Guide to Human Nature and Happiness."  Roberts joins us to explain the many ways in which Smith's work can be used to improve life in our time.

Wednesday, November 5, 2014/8:00    VENTSday, Election Style
The events of Election Day will give us a lot to talk about on VENTSday.  This week only, VENTSday expands to fill most of an hour of The Exchange.  VENTSday is our weekly "opinion swarm"… we throw a pair of topics on the table, and let listeners vent--politely--on those topics.  They can range from the global to the hyper-local, and all responsible opinions are welcome.  We bring the topics, you bring the opinions.  It's VENTSday on The Jefferson Exchange, and you participate by calling 1-800-838-3760 or emailing JX@jeffnet.org.

Wednesday, November 5, 2014/9:00    Trauma And Its Aftermath: "The Body Keeps Score"
Trauma tends to have effects that last long after the traumatic incident in a person's life.  Witness the recognition in modern times of PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk started working with stressed-out veterans before PTSD was even an official diagnosis.  Now he examines the many ways in which stress can alter the body and mind permanently, if not treated propertly.  His book is "The Body Keeps Score."  Dr. Van Der Kolk joins us.

Friday, November 6, 2014/8:00        First Friday In The Arts For November
The first Friday of any month has become a day to celebrate the arts around our region.  Several communities hold First Friday art walks, and some hold similar observances on other weekend days.  The Exchange syncs up with the art world on First Friday, by visiting with listeners about arts events in the coming month.  Join the free-for-all by calling with details about arts events in your town... 800-838-3760 around the region, 541-552-6782 in the Rogue Valley, or by email at JX@jeffnet.org.

Friday, November 6, 2014/9:00        Challenge Yourself: "I Dare Me"
A little cold water can certainly wake you up.  So journalist Luann Cahn took part in a polar bear plunge as the first act of "A Year of Firsts," her blog on her activities.  The blog is now a paperback book on how Cahn shook up her life, "I Dare Me."  She joins us to talk about the many things she did over the course of that year.
