UPDATE: THURSDAY, OCT. 1, 5:20 p.m. --- Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin has confirmed that ten people are dead and seven others were wounded in the shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg today.
Witnesses told the Roseburg News Review that a sole gunman opened fire at about 10:38 Thursday morning in a writing class held in Snyder Hall. 18-year-old Kortney Moore from Rogue River said she saw her teacher get shot in the head. She said the shooter told people in the classroom to stand up and state their religion, then started firing.
Sheriff Hanlin says law enforcement officers responding to the incident exchanged fire with the shooter, who was "neutralized." He wouldn't say if the shooter was killed by officers or committed suicide, but he did confirm the shooter died. He would not say if the shooter was included in the ten listed dead.
UPDATE: THURSDAY, OCT. 1, 2:17 p.m. -- The Douglas County Sheriff’s office says the death toll in the mass shooting at Roseburg's Umpqua Community College is still unclear. Various officials have been quoted citing figures between seven and 13 people dead, with 20 or more wounded.
The Sheriff’s Office says the incident is under control and there’s no longer any threat to the public. Sheriff John Hanlin said Oregon State Police, sheriff's deputies and the FBI are still combing through the campus as part of the investigation. Students and staff at the college were bused to the Douglas County Fairgrounds after being interviewed by investigators. All weekend activities on campus have been canceled and the campus will remain closed until Monday.
Oregon Governor Kate Brown said at a press conference that the shooter was a 20-year-old male, and that he died at the scene. No details are available as to whether the shooter was killed by law enforcement officers or killed himself. Brown said she’s on her way to Roseburg now.
UPDATE: THURSDAY, OCT. 1, 12:53 P.M. -- The Associated Press reports that the local fire district advised people via Twitter to stay away from the school. It later tweeted that there were “multiple casualties” but did not elaborate.
State police Lt. Bill Fugate told KATU-TV that seven to 10 people were dead and at least 20 others hurt. A photographer for the Roseburg News-Review newspaper said he saw people being loaded into multiple ambulances and taken to the local hospital.
Andrea Zielinski, a spokeswoman for Douglas County Sheriff’s office, told The Associated Press: “There’s no more threat.”
Zielinski would not say whether a suspect was apprehended or dead.
The school has about 3,000 students. Its website was down Thursday, and a phone message left at the college was not immediately returned.
State police and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press seeking details.
The sheriff’s office reported on Twitter that it received a call about the shooting at 10:38 a.m.
Students and faculty members were being bused to the Douglas County Fairgrounds, the sheriff’s office said.
A spokeswoman for the Oregon department that oversees community colleges in the state said she had not received any detailed information about the shooting.
“It’s extremely concerning and sad,” said Endi Hartigan, spokeswoman for the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission.

ORIGINAL POST: THURSDAY, OCT. 1 | 11:45 -- The Oregon State Police say at least seven people are dead and an unknown number are wounded in a mass shooting at Roseburg's Umpqua Community College.
The Eugene register Guard reports that the Douglas County Fire District reported that the shooting is now Code 4, meaning that the situation is contained and no further law enforcement is needed.
The Oregonian in Portland is reporting that dispatchers say the shooter is in custody.
