Paul Howell

Late Night Blues Host

Paul Howell spent the first 21 years of his life east of the Mississippi, then came out west looking for better opportunities, ending up in Shasta County, California. After spending what seemed like a lifetime in restaurant management, Paul switched careers and became a streetwalker for the U.S. Postal Service.

After delivering the mail to JPR’s Redding studios every day for years, Paul became a volunteer program host in 2002. Paul actually grew up thinking that he didn’t like the blues, until he found out that all his favorite rock music (Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers) was based on the blues. These days, not only does Paul play the blues every other Saturday night as one of the co-hosts of Late Night Blues, he can often be found singing the blues and strumming along on his guitar at watering holes around the Redding area. Paul was also a finalist in 2012's Shasta Senior Idol talent competition.

Standing at well over six feet tall, Paul is a former basketball player and downhill skier, and has raised 3 boys (and an equal number of cats) who are all taller than him. The boys, not the cats.
